WHERE TERROIR
MEETS CRAFTSMANSHIP
It all begins in the vineyard
Overlooking the river, our domain today spans over 250 acres (100 hectares) of estate vineyards, making Gratien Meyer one of the largest vineyard owners in the Crémant de Loire appellation.
Set between the Loire and the tuffeau hillsides, our plots benefit from limestone terroirs that bring freshness, tension, and the distinct minerality characteristic of our cuvées.
Four grape varieties shape the identity of the Maison:
- Chenin, the backbone of our wines;
- Chardonnay, for elegance;
- Cabernet Franc, for freshness and structure;
- Pinot Noir, for aromatic finesse.
Every harvest marks the start of a new vintage and the beginning of a precision-driven process that continues deep in our cellars.
Time is our most essential ingredient
Deep inside our troglodyte cellars carved into the tuffeau stone, each bottle evolves slowly under exceptional natural conditions. Constant temperatures, stable humidity, and intentionally extended aging allow our wines to reveal their full finesse.
Going well beyond appellation requirements, this extra time naturally refines the bubbles, unveils greater aromatic complexity, and gives our cuvées the signature elegance of the Gratien Meyer style.
Every stage of production takes place on site in Saumur, from blending to bottling and labeling. This complete in-house control guarantees consistent quality and character across all our cuvées.
Another unique mark of the Maison : our dosage liqueurs age in acacia wood casks, adding a fresh, floral, and subtly sap-rich note that enhances the lasting elegance of our wines.
The traditional method: the art of creating the bubble
All our cuvées are crafted using the traditional method: a second fermentation in the bottle that creates natural effervescence, using the same historic technique behind the world's finest sparkling wines.
Following an initial fermentation, our Cellar Master blends the different grape varieties to shape the signature Gratien Meyer style. The wine is then bottled, where a natural second fermentation takes place to produce the bubbles.
Bottles destined for our Crémant de Loire AOP and Saumur cuvées then undergo aging deep in our tuffeau cellars prior to riddling, disgorgement, and dosage. This dosage is made using a liqueur aged in acacia wood casks, imparting a floral and subtly sap-rich signature.
At Gratien Meyer, the traditional method is only the beginning. It is the extra time spent in our historic cellars, well beyond the minimum requirements of the “Saumur et Crémant de Loire” AOP appellations, that enables our wines to develop such refined bubbles and deep aromatic complexity.
