Description

Crémant de Loire is an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC/AOP) sparkling wine produced under strict quality regulations. Grapes are harvested by hand, and the wines are crafted using the traditional method, featuring a second fermentation in the bottle and at least 12 months of aging on the lees.

At Gratien Meyer, we choose to go further: our Crémants de Loire age for an average of 18 months on the lees deep within our tuffeau cellars in Saumur. This extra time contributes to the wine's balance and the delicate finesse of its effervescence.

Crémant de Loire and Saumur are two distinct appellations of fine Loire Valley sparkling wines produced using the traditional method, each adhering to its own specifications.

Saumur, in which Chenin Blanc plays a central role, is known for its freshness, vibrancy, and elegance. Appellation rules require a minimum aging period of 9 months; at Gratien Meyer, we extend this to at least 11 months.

Crémant de Loire requires a minimum of 12 months' aging. At Gratien Meyer, our Crémants age for an average of 18 months on the lees, giving the wine ample time to develop its balance and fine bubbles.

Both Crémant de Loire and Champagne are appellation-protected sparkling wines crafted using the traditional method, with a second fermentation in the bottle. They differ primarily in their geographical origin, terroirs, permitted grape varieties, and specific appellation rules.

Crémant de Loire is produced in the Loire Valley and highlights Chenin Blanc, the region's flagship grape variety. At Gratien Meyer, it gives rise to wines sought after for their freshness, elegance, and delicate effervescence.

The traditional method consists of inducing a second fermentation directly inside the bottle. It is during this stage that natural effervescence is created.

The bottles then continue to age on their lees before riddling and disgorgement. At Gratien Meyer, this technique sits at the core of expertise cultivated in Saumur since 1864, with particular focus given to aging time and bubble finesse.

Carved into tuffeau, the iconic limestone of the Loire Valley, Gratien Meyer's cellars naturally provide optimal conditions for wine aging thanks to their constant temperature and stable humidity levels.

In this protected underground environment, the bottles rest slowly on their lees, gradually developing their balance and refined effervescence.

Gratien Meyer works with several flagship Loire Valley grape varieties, including Chenin Blanc, the true backbone of the Maison, as well as Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir.

Each brings its own personality to the blends: freshness and tension, elegance, structure, or aromatic finesse.

A Gratien Meyer Crémant de Loire is best enjoyed chilled at a temperature that preserves its aromatic balance and delicate effervescence, ideally around 6°C (43°F).

Thanks to their freshness, finesse, and aromatic range, Gratien Meyer Crémants de Loire are as well suited to aperitifs as they are to full meals.

Pairings vary depending on the characteristics of each cuvée: fish, seafood, poultry, cheeses, or fruit desserts can bring out different facets of the wine. Detailed pairing recommendations for each bottle can be found on its product page.

For an aperitif, opt for a Crémant de Loire Brut, whose freshness and fine bubbles pair easily with a wide variety of bites. Gratien Meyer Crémant de Loire Brut, crafted using the traditional method, stands out for its balance and elegance.

For a fruitier alternative, Crémant de Loire Brut Rosé also makes an excellent choice for an aperitif, particularly alongside light appetizers or summer flavors.

Serve your Crémant de Loire chilled, ideally between 6 and 8°C (43–46°F).
