The Origins of the Maison

The history of Gratien Meyer is, above all, the story of an encounter. It brought together Alfred Gratien, a visionary entrepreneur, and Jean-Albert Meyer, a young Alsatian winemaker who brought his exacting standards and craftsmanship. Together, they imagined a Maison that would make Loire Valley sparkling wines shine far beyond Saumur.

Over 160 years later, this spirit of openness, innovation, and passion for passing down our craft continues to inspire every single cuvée.

1864

Creation of the Maison

Alfred Gratien founds the Maison in Saumur, acquiring a vineyard and 3 miles (5 km) of tuffeau cellars overlooking the Loire.

1896

Gratien becomes Gratien & Meyer

The partnership between Alfred Gratien and Jean-Albert Meyer creates Gratien & Meyer, a symbol of shared expertise.

1920-1930

An iconic Maison

Construction of the Art Deco facade, modernization of the facilities, and the rise of Gratien & Meyer as a leading producer of fine Loire Valley sparkling wines.

1984

Creation of the Cuvée Flamme

Gratien & Meyer launches Flamme, a distinct cuvée presented in a custom-designed bottle. A pioneer among Saumur wine Maisons, it quickly becomes one of Gratien & Meyer’s signature wines.

2003

A redesigned Tasting Room & Boutique

The Gratien & Meyer boutique undergoes a complete renovation, creating a modern welcoming space to explore the Maison’s heritage.

2018

Vineyard expansion

First major acquisition of 100 acres (42 hectares) of vines in the Crémant de Loire appellation.

2023

Over 250 acres of estate vineyards

The Maison strengthens its roots in the Loire Valley through further vineyard acquisitions.

2026

Gratien & Meyer becomes Gratien Meyer

A simplified name, a stronger identity. By dropping the "&", the Maison opens a new chapter in its history while staying true to what has defined its identity since 1864: revealing the finest expression of Crémant de Loire through time, tuffeau, and the Loire.
